“Toto, I don’t think we’re in Kansas anymore” - Dorothy, The Wizard of Oz
We’ve all been there. We’ve lost of our way and the road ahead is more than just a bit fuzzy. In this week’s episode of Fish Fry, I sit down with Lou Lutostanski (Avnet) and chat about why IoT projects are so challenging and what we can do if we find ourselves stuck in “IoT Purgatory.” Keeping with our IoT theme, we also investigate how Purdue University is looking to protect our smart implanted devices with electro-quasistatic human body communications and how a new kickstarter campaign called “Fromaggio” is taking the IoC (Internet of Cheese) to a whole new level.

Speech recognition is becoming more and more critical in IoT designs these days. In this week’s episode of Fish Fry, Gerard Andrews (Cadence Design Systems) and I are talking about the trends in voice control user interfaces, the advantages of locally-enabled speech recognition, and the differences between neural network processing for audio and imaging applications. Also this week, we celebrate Valentine’s Day with a special selection of neural network-created candy heart slogans and pick up lines.

Maybe the writing is on the wall. Maybe the truth is hidden in between the lines of your BOM. Maybe you really want to find another way but you don’t know where to start. Obsolescence may be bleeding your company dry but there is another way to deal with your end of life designs. In this week’s episode of Amelia’s Weekly Fish Fry, we attack the issues surrounding obsolescence and ad hoc sustainment with Ethan Plotkin (CEO - GDCA). Ethan and I discuss why obsolescence is like putting air in leaky tire and why changing the minds of our embedded system designers will be the true key to innovation. Also this week, we check out a new plant-inspired, tendril-equipped robot coming out of the IIT-Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia that can climb and curl around objects.

Architecting the Interference

Some people call this artificial intelligence, but the reality is this technology will enhance us. So instead of artificial intelligence, I think we'll augment our intelligence.” —Ginni Rometty
Artificial intelligence takes center stage in this week’s episode of Fish Fry. Ron Lowman (Synopsys - Author of The DNA of an Artificial Intelligence SoC) joins us to discuss the similarities inherent in AI chip design, the challenges of the multiple subsegments of AI, and what the next couple years holds for our AI chip design progress. Also this week, we take a closer look at DARPA’s new KAIROS (Knowledge-directed Artificial Intelligence Reasoning Over Schemas) program. We investigate how it will work (with a little help from a bunch of humans) and how it may (some day) be able to discern patterns of connected events to help mankind better understand the world around us.

It takes 8,460 bolts to assemble an automobile, and one nut to scatter it all over the road.
- Author Unknown
Hello, my name is Amelia and I have read at least four hundred press releases about automotive design this week. It seems that this year's Consumer Electronics Show has been taken over by automotive design. But behind the pomp and sparkle of CES lies the important stuff - the software that keeps us safe and secure. In this week's episode of Fish Fry, my first guest Jim McElroy (LDRA) and I chat about security vulnerability prevention, automotive coding standards, and the power of verification automation. Bill Lamie (Express Logic) also joins us to discuss challenges of standard compliance in the IoT space and how Express Logic’s X-Ware IoT platform can help your next IoT design security from the RTOS on up.

Privacy by Design
Friday Nov 16, 2018
Friday Nov 16, 2018
Did you know that the United States is the world’s biggest target for cybersecurity attacks? According to Ponemon’s 2018 Cost of a Data Breach Study, 38% of the global cyber attacks were aimed at the United States. This study also found that the average time it takes to identify a data breach is 196 days. Yeah, let that just sink in for a second. So can we turn around this whole situation? In this week’s episode of Fish Fry, my guest Cynthia Wright (Principle Cybersecurity Engineer at the MITRE Corporation) and I are talking about the many layers of cybersecurity in IoT, what "The Weaponization of Everything" is all about, and why privacy by design, security by design and resiliency by design will play a vital part in the future of Internet of Things.

The Significance of Sparsity
Friday Nov 09, 2018
Friday Nov 09, 2018
What has sparsity done for you lately? In this episode of Fish Fry, we investigate the challenges that surround on-device artificial intelligence processing. Megha Daga (Cadence Design Systems) and I discuss the why the presence of zeroes is becoming more and more important in the development of neural networks and how sparsity can be used for bandwidth and compute reduction. In this week’s News You May Have Missed, we check out how the the University of Adelaide is making huge strides in quantum memory technology with a little help from an atomic tractor beam and the world’s first “waveguide trap”.
