Refocusing Our Embedded Vision
Friday Jun 19, 2015
Friday Jun 19, 2015
In this week's episode of Fish Fry, Mario Bergeron (Avnet) and I are scanning the horizon to get a closer look at how FPGAs will shape the future of embedded vision. We explore why embedded vision is a killer app for SoC FPGAs and why there won't be just one embedded vision to rule them all. Also this week, I check out a new 3D-printed material that changes texture on demand.

Evolution is the name of the game in this week’s Fish Fry. The way we interact with our machines has changed dramatically in the past decade and will continue to evolve - from buttons and toggles to new, more hands-free forms of human-machine interface (HMI). I chat with Tal Krzypow from eyeSight Technologies about the future of HMI. We look at the growing trend toward hands-free interfaces, the important role intuition plays in the design of HMI, and where HMI is headed in the years to come. Also this week, we check out Element14’s new “DreamBoard vs Battle of the Boards” contest.

You scream, I scream, we all scream for…ROBOTS! In this week’s Fish Fry, we take a closer look at the GertBOT, a new robotics add-on board for Raspberry Pi recently released by Element 14. I’ve got Sagar Jethani with me to tell you about the powerful capabilities of this new expansion board. Sagar and I also explore the correlation between guitar playing and engineering, and why Eddie Van Halen is called the “Edison of guitar players.” Then, in keeping with our spirit of innovation and musical invention, I explore a new Etsy product that hopes to usher in a new generation of mixtapes.

Buckle your seatbelt, make sure your tray table is stowed, and be sure you've read our helpful in-flight safety pamphlet - because we're taking flight! This week’s Fish Fry is about the tiniest drone this side of CES - the ZANO nano drone. My guest is Keith Chu (Lantronix) and we’re getting into the WiFi-enabled guts of this itty-bitty WiFi controlled nano drone. (Spoiler Alert: You fly it with your smart phone!) Also this week, we're checking out a new quadcopter that would make Han Solo proud, and looking into how you can leverage the power of Simulink and MATLAB in your next SoC/FPGA design.

What’s the difference between a human and a pile of rocks? A robot algorithm! (Of course) In this week’s episode of Fish Fry, we check out a new robot being developed at the University of Guadalajara that utilizes a pattern recognition algorithm to determine the silhouette of a human body. Also this week, we delve into the trials and tribulations of SoC design with Bill Neifert of Carbon Design Systems. Bill and I chat about how Carbon is focusing on the automatic creation of RTL-accurate models for integration into SoC designs and how you can make your IP configuration options a whole bunch easier.
