Artificial Intelligence and the Need for Speed
Friday Apr 27, 2018
Friday Apr 27, 2018
This week’s episode of Fish Fry is all about artificial intelligence, machine vision, and basketball! Pulin Desai (Cadence Design Systems) and I discuss a couple of use cases that require a mix of both vision and artificial intelligence and why our “need for speed” has pushed for new design requirements in the mobile, AR/VR, surveillance, automotive and drone/robotics markets. We also dive into the details of a thesis by Simone Francia at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia that uses deep learning to classify basketball player actions on the court. Keeping with our AI theme this week, we’ll take a look at a plan to protect the US power grid with AI-powered tower-mounted robots.

Free is a Very Good Price!
Friday Apr 20, 2018
Friday Apr 20, 2018
When I was a kid, a local furniture mogul gave away free haircuts to entice customers into his showroom. The haircuts were all the same, and on Monday mornings at school it was easy to tell whose mom went furniture shopping over the weekend. Free is an interesting price point. It can mean incredible savings for some really cool stuff, or it can mean a buzz cut that made you look suspiciously like the owner of the local furniture store.
In this week’s episode of Fish Fry, we take a closer look at Ultra Librarian - the world’s largest library of verified EDA symbols, footprints, and 3D models, and we'll find out why EMA Design Automation has made their robust EDA library free of charge. Also this week, we'll look at a new pyroelectric energy conversion prototype unveiled by the University of California Berkeley that could transform waste heat into a renewable source of energy.

At what point in the creation of a chip does physical design actually begin? (Spoiler Alert: answers may vary.) In this week’s episode of Fish Fry, Dave Stratman and I discuss the ongoing challenges of the physical design process, why convergent design flows are critical for today’s ever shrinking process nodes, and how form factor and the environment around the end customer affects physical design. It's Getting Hot in Here
Friday Feb 23, 2018
Friday Feb 23, 2018
We know that energy is all around us, but how exactly do we harness it? To start things off this week, we take a closer look at an interesting new energy harvesting technology developed at MIT called a “thermal resonator.” By utilizing the gradual ambient temperature changes that occur over the course of a day, this technology can literally pull electricity out of the thin air. We check out how this “thermal resonator” works and what sets it apart from other thermoelectric applications found on the market today. Keeping with our thermal theme, we also chat with Thierry Wastiaux (Interface Concept) about the best practices for thermal management in HPEC VPX Systems.
