How do you dream in IoT? Does the Power Bogey Man burn up your diodes? Does process integration lurk in the shadows? Never fear, my engineering compatriots - help is on the way. In this week’s Fish Fry, we delve into the deep dark secrets of IoT IP. My guest Ron Lowman and I discuss how subsystem re-architecture can keep that Power Bogey Man at bay, what design requirements should be tackled first, and how IP may just be the key to sweet IoT dreams after all.

Making Tesla Proud -- A Fish Fry Greatest Hit!
Monday Nov 02, 2015
Monday Nov 02, 2015
It’s creepy! It’s crawly. It occasionally has scales! It’s Amelia’s Weekly Fish Fry! This week we are celebrating one of the coolest (and one might say, creepiest) scientists, electrical engineers, and visionaries the world has ever seen -- Nikola Tesla. My guest this week is physicist Heidi Baumgartner. She can run a nuclear reactor, she can teach soldering, and most importantly for today’s broadcast, she is one of the founders of OneTesla. Heidi is here to explain exactly how you can build your very own singing Tesla coil, how she became involved with OneTesla, and what it's like to vacation at Chernobyl. Also this week, we check out why 8-bit shouldn’t be thrown out like last year’s Halloween candy.

The Touchscreen Revolution -- A Fish Fry Greatest Hit
Monday Nov 02, 2015
Monday Nov 02, 2015
What do the blue-rayed limpet and silver nanowires have to do with advances in touchscreen technology? Absolutely everything! This week's Fish Fry looks into how silver-coated nanowires are changing the touchscreens and OLEDs of today, and could change the film-based solar cells and flexible displays of tomorrow. My guest is Sri Peruvemba from Cambrios, and we discuss the technology behind silver nanowires, how they can be implemented into a variety of designs, and what The Society for Information Display is all about. Also this week, we check out a groundbreaking new study by a team of researchers from MIT and Harvard that looks to harness unique reflective power found in the blue stripes of the blue-rayed limpet to unlock a new kind of transparent display technology.

Refocusing Our Embedded Vision -- A Fish Fry Greatest Hit
Monday Nov 02, 2015
Monday Nov 02, 2015
In this week's episode of Fish Fry, Mario Bergeron (Avnet) and I are scanning the horizon to get a closer look at how FPGAs will shape the future of embedded vision. We explore why embedded vision is a killer app for SoC FPGAs and why there won't be just one embedded vision to rule them all. Also this week, I check out a new 3D-printed material that changes texture on demand.

(Raspberry) Pi in the Sky -- A Fish Fry Greatest Hit
Monday Nov 02, 2015
Monday Nov 02, 2015
Fish Fry is going raspberry this week, Raspberry Pi that is! My special guest is none other than the co-creator of the Raspberry Pi board Gert van Loo. Gert and I are chatting about how the Raspberry Pi board was created, how Gert built upon Raspberry Pi to create the Gertboard, and why he thinks IO education is important for the next wave of engineers. Also this week, I'm chatting with Cliff Ortmeyer (newark element14) about the interesting intersection of hackers, makers, and engineers.

What has your power supply done for you lately? In this week’s Fish Fry, we take a closer look at a revolutionary new technology that's taking power supplies by storm. My guest is Michael Freeman (CEO/CTO - Semitrex) and he’s here to introduce us to the power of the muxcapacitor and unveil how Semitrex plans to stem the tide of the world’s energy consumption...one power supply at a time. Also this week, we take a closer look at the newest rumors surrounding Intel's buyout of Altera.

As engineers we have the power to change the world. We have the ability to spark change (and blue smoke occasionally) and help cure the ills that plague our society. Did you know that according to a study published by the New York Times, brain trauma affects one in three players in the National Football League? My guest Sagar Jethani (element14) is here to introduce us to Element14's Sudden Impact Challenge, a design contest intended to help stem the tide of undiagnosed on-field injuries. In this week’s Fish Fry, we take a closer look at the Sudden Impact Design Contest winners and examine why contests like this one are so vital to our engineering community as a whole. Also this week, we check out Cadence’s new Indago Debug platform (spoiler alert: your printf days may be over for good).

The Internet of Industry
Friday Sep 11, 2015
Friday Sep 11, 2015
In this week’s Fish Fry, we’re tackling another side of the multi-sided IoT die - industrial internet. My guest Brian Bedrosian (Broadcom) is here to chat with us about the industrial internet movement, and where Industrial IoT is headed. He’ll also tell us what he thinks the odds look like for another Golden State Warrior NBA title championship next season! Also this week, we take a closer look at a new patent recently granted to Boeing that may make our long sought dreams of a “real” transformer to life.

Gather 'round makers, it’s innovation time! In this week’s Fish Fry, we’re checking out the Texas Instruments Innovation Challenge North America Design Contest with Steve Lyle from TI. Steve introduces us to this year’s super cool winning entries including an advanced new synthesizer that will change how the physically disabled create music, a new wearable that will help the hearing impaired communicate with others, and a full flight control system designed for quadrotor unmanned aerial vehicles that could change how unmanned search and rescue missions are carried out. Also this week, we look into a new IoT product launched by Project Overlord (yes, really).

USB Type C for You and Me
Friday Aug 28, 2015
Friday Aug 28, 2015
It slices, it dices, it juliennes, and it doesn't care which way you plug it in - it's USB type C. Coming soon to a consumer electronic design near you, this new interface is bound to take the electronics world by storm. Well, that might be overstating things a bit. USB type C may not be the electronics equivalent of sliced bread, and it may not revolutionize the world of CE, but it will be pretty darn cool to start using in our designs (and our everyday lives). This week we're taking a closer look at the design challenges surrounding USB type C and how you can get it up and running in your next design. My guest is Gervais Fong and we're discussing all of this... and the wonder of BBQ too.
