In this week’s episode of Fish Fry, we gaze up at the starlit sky and dream of space exploration. We chat with Noel Dube (Reflex CES) about the differences between Low-Earth Orbit (LEO), Geosynchronous Equatorial Orbit (GEO) and Very Low Earth Orbit (VLEO) and investigate the unique challenges each of these orbits present designers today. We also discuss the role of optical transceivers and interconnects will play in the future of satellite installation. In the second part of our episode, we explore the world’s first refuel-able steam engine system for spacecraft propulsion developed by Honeybee Robotics and University of Central Florida planetary research scientist Phil Metzger. We take a closer look at how this new prototype works and how it could revolutionize space exploration as we know it.

Maybe the writing is on the wall. Maybe the truth is hidden in between the lines of your BOM. Maybe you really want to find another way but you don’t know where to start. Obsolescence may be bleeding your company dry but there is another way to deal with your end of life designs. In this week’s episode of Amelia’s Weekly Fish Fry, we attack the issues surrounding obsolescence and ad hoc sustainment with Ethan Plotkin (CEO - GDCA). Ethan and I discuss why obsolescence is like putting air in leaky tire and why changing the minds of our embedded system designers will be the true key to innovation. Also this week, we check out a new plant-inspired, tendril-equipped robot coming out of the IIT-Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia that can climb and curl around objects.

I just flew in from San Diego and boy is my VPX tired! Coming to you from the Embedded Tech Trends Conference in Southern California, this week’s episode of Fish Fry is all about how open system architectures can drive innovation in the world of embedded design. First up, Mark Littlefield (Kontron) and I chat about the secrets of the success of open system architectures, the pros and cons of OpenVPX, and what SOSA (Sensor Open Systems Architecture) is doing to help solve some of the myriad of challenges we are facing in this arena. Also this week, I sit down with Jess Isquith (President/CEO - PICMG) and discuss the the power of open modular computing standards and the meaning behind her session at this year’s Embedded Tech Trends Conference called “The Past is Prologue”.

Some people call this artificial intelligence, but the reality is this technology will enhance us. So instead of artificial intelligence, I think we'll augment our intelligence.” —Ginni Rometty
Artificial intelligence takes center stage in this week’s episode of Fish Fry. Ron Lowman (Synopsys - Author of The DNA of an Artificial Intelligence SoC) joins us to discuss the similarities inherent in AI chip design, the challenges of the multiple subsegments of AI, and what the next couple years holds for our AI chip design progress. Also this week, we take a closer look at DARPA’s new KAIROS (Knowledge-directed Artificial Intelligence Reasoning Over Schemas) program. We investigate how it will work (with a little help from a bunch of humans) and how it may (some day) be able to discern patterns of connected events to help mankind better understand the world around us.
