At Attention Ye Salty Dogs! Hoist the mizzen mast, Fish Fry is ready to set sail! This week Jim Beneke comes aboard our mighty Fish Fryin’ ship to plot a course to X-Fest - the yearly how-to training sessions from Avnet and Xilinx for FPGA, DSP, SoC and embedded systems designers. Join us as we dig into X-Fest’s treasure trove of deep tech seminars, trainings, and much more. Then, in keeping with our pirateous parade, we delve into the details of a new pirate-busting radarrrr called WatchStander, and check out how artificial intelligence plays an important role in WatchStander’s modus operandi.

It's time to break out the sparklers, an arc welder or two, and your best space suit - Fish Fry is here to celebrate! We're ringing in Fish Fry's 100th podcast episode with an ode to two of our favorite subjects: open source embedded system development and photos from from the Mars Rover. First up, Marc McComb (Microchip) introduces us to the ChipKit Platform. Marc and I jump feet first into the ChipKit platform ecosystem and check out what this open source platform is all about. Also this week, Fish Fry welcomes Nikos Zervas, of COO CAST, Inc. Nikos brings us some interesting details about how CAST IP found itself in the Mars Rover and (with the help of CAST's JPEG Encoder IP) why our view of the Red Planet will never be the same.
We're giving away five PIXI kits (courtesy of Maxim Integrated Products) but you'll have to listen to the podcast to find out how to enter to win!

Friday Jun 27, 2014
Fish Fry: the Final Frontier. In this episode, we journey to a world where our analog is programmable (ok, configurable) and our food is replicated (complete with a full serving of your nutritional needs). First, we delve into the bits, bobs, and ADCs of Maxim's new PIXI configurable analog with Martin Mason. Martin and I discuss the details of this new configurable analog, and why the PIXI is better (and more flexible) than a big ol' pile of discreet components. Also this week, we check out Nestlé's new "Iron Man" program that aims to reshape our kitchens and the resupply world's nutritional needs. (Spoiler Alert: A true Star Trek food replicator may be closer to reality than we know.)

In honor of the first annual National Day of Making, Fish Fry is headed into the delight-filled world of Maker Faires, microcontrollers, and watercolor painting robots. Andreas Eieland (Atmel) starts off the excitement by giving us a tour of Atmel’s Tech on Tour 18 wheeler. Andreas and I also discuss the disconnect between the growing number of IoT devices and the declining the number of engineers in the world and how Maker Faires can be instrumental in filling this void.
Also this week, Fish Fry is proud to welcome the one and only Super Awesome Sylvia. Sylvia has her own web TV show, and is a maker extraordinaire and trending tech celebrity. Did I also mention she’s 12? Join me as I chat with Sylvia about one of her latest projects...a watercolor painting robot.

What has your distributor done for you lately? Maybe more than you know. In this week’s Fish Fry, we look beyond the rows and rows of pieces and parts, beyond the microcontrollers and ADCs - to the softer side of distribution - to the place where the rubber meets the road but you’re not quite ready to race at Indy yet. We’re talking development boards and FAEs with Jim Beneke and Ron Moore from Avnet. Together we look into the specifics of the Zedboard and investigate the changing role of field application engineers in our engineering process. Also this week, we find out how NASA intends to address the issue of limited bandwidth from space - one laser at a time.

Do you know the way to San Francisco? Do you know the way to rows and rows of obscure interesting and innovative point tools? In this week’s Fish Fry, we examine two sides of the multi-faceted ecosystem that is the Design Automation Conference - EDA and IC. On the EDA side, we chat with Chris Porter and Salem Kapetanovic from IBM about how EDA can leverage the Cloud in a whole new way. On the integrated circuit side of DAC life, we chat with eSilicon CEO Jack Harding about how eSilicon is bringing eCommerce to IC design and why IP MarketPlace should be your next stop on the way to GDS11. Also this week, we unveil Amelia’s top five things you may have missed at DAC. (Spoiler alert: DAC Attendees apparently don’t know how to play Jenga™.)

Do you remember your first EE project? Do you remember the delight in your soul when you first saw that LED light up or that plume of blue smoke rise across the room? In this week's Fish Fry, we harken back to the days when we were all budding engineers trying to make our circuits work for the first time. My guest is John Weiss, Director of Bayview BOOM. John is here to to introduce us to Bayview BOOM - a revolutionary program that brings engineering education to the young people of San Francicso's Bayview/Hunters Point neighborhood. Join John and I as we chat about how Bayview BOOM nurtures cognitive growth, physical activity and a love for electronic design in its students - one boom box at a time.

Smart, Ultra-low power wireless modules are the name of the game of this week’s Fish Fry. We sit down with Nick Kanopoulos, CEO of Econais to chat about the pain of end product WiFi integration, why the need for low power consumption in IoT devices is becoming a bigger issue these days, and how software can ease our pain in both of these realms. Also this week, we unveil some of the cool details of this year’s Sensors Expo and Conference and we'll also let you in on a secret code to get in for free (or cheap, at least).

In this week’s editorial matrix, Fish Fry has EDA on all sides. In one corner, we have Chuck Alpert (DAC 2014 Technical Program Chair) here to give us the skinny on this year’s Design Automation Conference and Expo. Chuck gives the low down on what kind of cool conference tracks and tutorials are being offered, how you can attend the conference on the cheap, and where the hip and happenin’ parties will be found. Then, keeping with our EDA theme, we also sit down with Tom De Schutter (Synopsys) and discuss the benefits and best practices of virtual prototyping for your next design.

There’s a break in the wall. It’s tiny but it’s there. The water will seep through at some point, we know this. Will we be ready for the rising tide or will we flounder to find a patch to save the day? Security in our embedded systems is no longer an issue we can ignore and in this week’s Fish Fry, we get down to the heart of the matter with Alan Grau (President - Icon Labs). Alan and I chat about the rise of intrusion detection in RTOS-based systems and we address the challenges of providing security for Smart Home devices. Also this week, I rant about certain people I know not “believing” in IoT and the pains of IP integration.
