Friday Mar 07, 2014
Once in a while, we all need some help. When the vast landscape of our next software project makes our head hurt, we need a place to go to hang out and throw our ideas around. So - where do we go? The Software Freedom Conservancy, that's where. My guest this week is Bradley M. Kuhn - Executive Director of the Software Freedom Conservancy. Brad and I chat about what the Software Freedom Conservancy is all about, how we can participate, what projects they are working on, and I even slip in little question about New York City. Also this week, I check out the Tiny Engineer Superhero Emergency Kit and reveal how this tiny but mighty kit can impress your friends and family.

Get out your pick axes, canaries, and a high powered ASIC or two - we're going mining! In this week's Fish Fry, we venture deep into the BitCoin caves with Bob Smith (VP - Uniquify). Bob and I chat about how the BitCoin mining race is heating up (literally) and how Uniquify is using their ASIC expertise to create super-powered machines mining today's hottest (and most controversial) virtual commodity. Also this week, I unveil a new unique Amelia-alternative to the current hardware-biased BitCoin race. I've got two words for you: BitCoin MMORPG. So strap on your headlamps ladies and gentlemen, we're going in.

Adventures in Verification Land
Friday Feb 21, 2014
Friday Feb 21, 2014
Take two steps forward and three steps back. Not all parts of our design process are created equal. In this week's Fish Fry, we examine one of the most painful, frightening, and frustrating parts of our design process - verification. My first guest is Tom Anderson (Breker Verification Systems), and we chat about formal verification, what Breker’s new verification technology TrekSoC-Si is all about, and where you can the best vinyl in Silicon Valley. Then, continuing the formal V theme - we go to Vigyan Singhal, CEO of Oski Technology. Vigyan and I dive into the details of the "Decoding Formal Club." The first rule of "Decoding Formal Club"? Well, we're gonna break that one right here. Vigyan also reveals the secret behind the name "Oski". Also this week, I investigate how Netflix is looking to read your thoughts with a little help from Amazon's Cloud services. Better put on that foil hat!

In this week’s Fish Fryin’ electronic engineering podcast we're talking about love - the love of cold storage, the love of analog components, and the love of integrated design environments. First, we get comfy and cozy with cold storage and open computing with Scott MCDonald (Rorke Global Solutions). Next, we revel in our desire for analog components and sensor-based applications with Sean Long of Maxim Integrated Products. Finally we round out today's EE love-a-thon with a look into our continuing infatuation with integrated design environments. Come join us for this week's Fish Fryin' EE love fest!

Here at Fish Fry, when big news breaks, we swim to it. When the EE landscape changes, we evolve, lose our gills, begin breathing air, and start walking on land. This is one of those weeks. When we got wind that Cadence was in the process of acquiring Forte, we jumped on the chance to get the goods on this groundbreaking news story. My guest this week is Craig Cochran (Vice President, Corporate Marketing at Cadence Design Systems) and we discuss the growing adoption of high level synthesis and how Forte plays into the Cadence system-level design flow. Also this week, we check out how the Hybrid Memory Cube aims to take out DDR, and how FPGAs can help you with your HMC heavy lifting.

Friday Jan 31, 2014
The lights: Fluorescent. The carpet: Padded. The lanes: Routed. Where in the world could Fish Fry be? DesignCon 2014, of course. In this special DesignCon episode of Fish Fry, we launch ourselves into the multi-faceted world of electronic design with a couple of interesting interviews. My first guest is none other than Kilopass CEO Charlie Cheng. We get down to nuts and bolts of non-volatile memory and I get Charlie's take on where the technology is headed over the next few years. Next, I chat with Mark Toth (CadSoft) about CadSoft's ubiquitous EAGLE PCB Design Software and he gives me the inside scoop on the results of their recent PCB design survey.

The tachometer is at redline. The ABS is on high alert. A security breach has been detected and the driver doesn't suspect a thing. Whether we like or not, safety and security are important detours that must be considered as we map our way to a new a land of connected telematics in our cars. In this week's Fish Fry we tackle the complex issue of security in today's connected cars with Tom Trill of Spansion. Tom and I discuss the role NOR embedded memory will play in the upcoming (literal) information superhighway. We also check out a new crowd sourcing campaign that brings together the wonder of chocolate with the power of ioT.

Tiny Turbines, Real Superhero Powers, and Servers on Chip
Friday Jan 17, 2014
Friday Jan 17, 2014
One part server-on-chip, two parts green energy - with a heavy sprinkling of superhero powers - this week's Fish Fry takes on advances in connectivity. We investigate the University of Texas at Arlington's unique collaboration with WinMEMS to create a new way to harness the wind to power your cellphone. Next, we chat with Mike Major (AppliedMicro) about how AppliedMicro is connecting the data center dots with some faster lines and finally, I’ll tell you how you might be able to get yourself some real superhero powers - using ultrasound.

Out of the Fab and Into the Frying Pan
Friday Dec 20, 2013
Friday Dec 20, 2013
In this week’s Fish Fry, we’re throwing some FR4 on the barbie and frying up a side of silicon -- eSilicon to be exact. My guest is EE Master Chef Mike Gianfagna from eSilicon. Mike always joins Fish Fry around this time of year, and this year we are discussing the state of the semiconductor union: what’s keeping us hungry for Moore, and what trends are boiling on high. Also this week, we check out a new crowdsourcing event called “The Iron Man Factory” that could make your dreams (and mine) of a 3D printed Iron Man suit a reality - if they can get Marvel to agree to it.
